Abstract

The dynamics derived from the agribusiness of flowers for export, which replaced numerous cattle farms in Cayambe, led to an increase in the number of residents in the city and the expansion of its periphery. The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes that have occurred in the city of Cayambe and its immediate rural area since the introduction of the crop, together with an approach of the perceptions of those who experienced them, between 1990 and 2010. The methodological strategy combined quantitative and qualitative methods: spatial analysis, descriptive statistics, documentary analysis and interview processing. By 2010, flower farms occupied five times more land than in 1993, as well as unconsolidated settlements, while total population doubled between 1990 and 2010. Floriculture has contributed to the changes in the city, and in the process a paradox emerges around the need for housing and the oversupply of urban space.
