Neoliberal conservation in northern Argentina. The case of indigenous struggles for the forest and tourism development in the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve.

Main Article Content

Abstract

Processes of commodification of nature are associated with rivatization, enclosure, alienation, individualization and valuation of territories and resources.
In the Yabotí Biosphere Reserve, in northeastern Argentina, an incipient process of tourist valuation of the jungle is taking place, carried out by forestry companies
with state support and conservation organizations.
But it is also supported by the Mbya-Guaraní communities that for decades have faced the exploitation of the forest carried out by those same companies.
Thus, here the participation of indigenous communities in the process of tourist valuation and commercialization of nature cannot be explained just as the transition
to a new form that the expansion of capital, but rather comes from a long history of indigenous struggles.
In this work we propose that commodification is achieved as part of an agreement given on unequal terms but where communities find in this mechanism a way of
resolution of a territorial dispute.
